New Policy At Rankin County Schools in Response to Proposed LGBT Club

RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. – Kids in Rankin County will now need permission from their parents if they want to join a club. The policy was apparently put in place in an attempt to prevent students at Brandon High school from creating a gay-straight alliance (GSA) club, or as Superintendent Lynn Weathersby put it, “gay clubs.”

Since, the district has received warnings from the ACLU and the Human Rights Campaign noting that federal law provides protections for student groups. According to federal law it’s unlawful for any public secondary school which receives federal financial assistance to deny equal access to any student who wishes to conduct a meeting within a limited open forum on the basis of the religious, political, philosophical, or other content of the speech at such meetings.”
