After nine seasons as the head coach of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, Dan Mullen decided to leave Starkville to become the head coach of the Florida Gators. While the official search for a new head coach may have just begun, Sid Salter, Chief Communications Officer for MSU, says that the announcement of a new coach may come sooner rather than later.

“I think there was a significant anticipation that this development might come to pass and that we might be in search mode, so several weeks ago, the building blocks were put in place to have an orderly and efficient search process,” Salter said. “At this point, we anticipate an announcement of a new coach being made as early as late this week.”

Salter wouldn’t comment on potential candidates for the position but stated that he, along with AD John Cohen and President Mark Keenum, is confident that they will be able to be able to fill the opening with a coach that can continue Mullen’s winning ways at Mississippi State.

“There has been a significant amount of interest from coaches around the country in this vacancy, and we feel really good as an institution that we’ll be able to introduce a new head coach that can continue the arc of success and accomplishment that coach Mullen had during his tenure,” Salter said.

Former Mississippi State QB Matt Wyatt says that as the administration heads out to search for their new coach, they are able to do something that they never have before by attracting candidates with upgraded facilities and most importantly, a roster filled with talent.

Whoever the next head coach of MSU may be, they will have big shoes to fill as Mullen led the team to seven bowl games, helped guide the team to a #1 ranking during the 2014 season, and sits at second all-time with 69 wins as the head coach of the Bulldogs.
