WASHINGTON, D.C.- Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) announced his support of the bill, “International Megan’s Law.”
The bill would better protect children from child exploitation. It was created by U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) and would create a worldwide notification system to alert certain countries when a convicted sex offender is traveling within their borders.
“Human trafficking is a heinous crime that harms the most vulnerable people in our society. It should not be tolerated. This legislation is intended to improve international cooperation to the exploitation of children,” Cochran said. “I commend Senator Shelby for taking the lead on this important legislation, and encourage my colleagues to support its swift passage.”
It would also allow for closer monitoring of the travel, internationally, of sex offenders and establish an Angel Watch Center at the Department of Homeland Security and provide communication possibilities between them and the U.S. Marshals Service National Sex Offender Targeting Office. The system would prevent any sex offenders being lost in the system if exiting the United States.
