A new historical marker has been unveiled in the city of Ocean Springs.
The marker was placed Wednesday at L&N Train Depot, widely considered a cornerstone of the thriving coastal town’s history as it serves as an entryway to the downtown area.
The L&N Train Depot was constructed in 1907 and served vital for transportation, commerce, and local life in Ocean Springs until its decommission in 1965. Still, the building stood strong and was eventually turned into a multi-use facility that currently includes the Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce, Visitor’s Center, and The Walter Anderson Shop: Realizations.
“The dedication of this historic marker is a celebration of our community’s history and a reminder of the depot’s important role in our community,” Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Cynthia Sutton said. “We are thrilled to honor this Mississippi designated landmark and its contribution to our local history.”
Sutton was joined by members of the public, Mayor Kenny Holloway, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, and others for Wednesday’s ceremony.
The L&N Depot marker is now one of 1,500 historic landmarks statewide and the third in Ocean Springs. The other two are located at the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Arts Center and the Steamboat House.
