David Browning has been appointed as deputy commissioner of the Mississippi Insurance Department (MID) by the recently reelected Commissioner of Insurance Mike Chaney.
Browning joined MID in 2001 before serving as the director of the financial and market regulation division for the next decade.
During his time as director, the Yazoo City native worked on legislation, the MID’s accreditation status, and the financial and non-financial oversight of companies licensed in Mississippi.
Prior to his time in the MID, Browning worked in the bond division of the state treasurer’s office and also served as an intern for the secretary of state’s office.
Browning has been a member of the Insurance Regulatory Examiners Society while serving as the state chairman of the Mississippi Chapter of the Society of Financial Examiners. He currently holds the Certified Financial Examiner (CFE) designation.
“David’s financial expertise and years of experience at the department makes him a solid choice for this position,” Chaney said. “He has worked directly with the current Deputy Commissioner and understands the day-to-day demands of the department. This will provide continuity in our mission to serve insurance consumers in Mississippi and make sure that insurance companies remain solvent and consumers are protected.”
Browning’s appointment will become effective January 1, 2024, following the retirement of Deputy Commissioner Mark Haire, who was named general counsel of MID in 2001 and appointed deputy commissioner in 2009.
