Another round of applications for Mississippi’s wild hog control program will soon be available.
Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson announced on Thursday that the state will begin accepting applications on Saturday, with the submission deadline falling on February 15. Mississippians from all counties can apply.
Through this program, the state’s agriculture department supplies “smart” traps to landowners and managers to wild hogs, a nuisance species, on private agricultural and forestry lands in Mississippi. The training necessary to use these traps and technical guidance regarding the most effective methods to trap and control wild hogs on private lands is also offered.

Applications must be completed and submitted online. Per officials, submissions will be evaluated based on the number of acres available for trapping, historical agricultural losses caused by wild hogs on the property, and current trapping efforts on the property.
A cooperative application is encouraged for small acreage, meaning small land managers are encouraged to collaborate with their peers to submit just one application. Traps will be available for one-month intervals, dependent upon use and success. One trap per 500 acres is recommended.
