The Magnolia State is currently the 2nd most obese state in the country with an obesity rate of 35.6 percent. Second only to Louisiana. When you examine the percentage of Mississippians who are inactive that number is 31 percent.
With the hopes of getting more people off the couch and on the trails ,the American Heart Association is challenging Mississippians to log a million steps Wednesday.
Dr. Timothy Quinn is with The American Heart Association Greater Southeast Affiliate and reminds folks that heart disease is the leading killer in the U.S. and can be addressed through simple steps.
“Heart disease, which is the number one killer, can be drastically reduced by individuals participating in an exercise program,” said Quinn.
According to Quinn, a lot of people make the mistakes of thinking a diet is going to solve all their problems. He on the other hand recommends that people see healthy eating as part of a bigger lifestyle, not a temporary fix.
“A diet is not something you can do the rest of your life. What you can do is make an individual decision that you are going to adopt a healthier lifestyle, said Quinn.
How many steps are you going to take today?
