HATTIESBURG, Miss.–A lecture series looking at the Muslim journey to North America starts Wednesday night at the University of Southern Mississippi.
The first part is “Muslim Slaves in the American South” and will talk about the slave trade from Africa.
“The earliest Muslims in the United States were actually part of the slave trade,” said USM professor Daniel Capper.
He pointed out many people clearly not realizing that when they think of the old South and slaves.
“Ten percent of those slaves were Muslims.”
The series starts at 7:30 p.m. at the International building in room 101.
