Less than two weeks from now, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science will host the annual Archaeology Expo on Saturday, Oct. 12.
The family-friendly event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the grounds of the museum in Jackson and is sure to provide an opportunity for kids and adults to learn about the people who have called Mississippi home for thousands of years. The Expo is free to the public and provided by the Mississippi Archaeological Association.
The Expo, which will center around American Indian cultural heritage in Mississippi, will allow attendees to meet Choctaw representatives and see lifeway displays that include spear-throwing and more. There will be chances to try your hand at identifying various artifacts before attending lectures on topics such as Mississippi’s Ice Age megafauna and the American Southeast at the end of the Ice Age.
Additionally, the Expo will feature prehistoric technology stations, opportunities for arts and crafts, and chances to discuss history with experts from the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the Archeological Conservancy, and the National Park Service. While admission is complimentary, there will be food trucks on-site with a variety of options to choose from.
“We are looking forward to this year’s Archaeology Expo. Partnering with MDWFP’s Museum of Natural Science will bring a richer experience to attendees,” said Nikki Mattson, president of the Mississippi Archaeological Association. “We are excited about the speakers, demonstrations, and activities and hope to see everyone there!”
The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, which falls under the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, is located at 2148 Riverside Drive in Jackson. Currently, visitors are being asked to enter museum grounds through a temporary entrance just south of the main gate due to repaving.
