MERIDIAN, Miss.–Eva Carmichael had lived in her house for over 60 years when four teenagers busted in and shot her last weekend, said Meridian Police. Thursday they announced capital murder and burglary charges.
JaQuis Houston, 18, Marcus Steele,II, 18, Juwan McCallum, 18 and DeShay Shively, 17, were charged in the early Sunday shooting.
Meridian Police Chief Benny Dubose said in a news conference in the Queen City that the department’s detectives put in extra hours to make sure the killers were caught.
“It appeared, based on the investigation, that Ms. Carmichael surprised the individuals that entered the home, and as a result, she was shot,” said Dubose.
He said she was shot multiple times. She tried to call 911 but was unable to talk when the dispatcher answered. That’s when police were sent to the home and found the front door open, Carmichael murdered, and the people who did it already gone.
“There are some individuals out there who have very little concern for human life,” said Dubose.
He encouraged the community to get involved and help police solve crimes. He also said the investigation is not done and that more arrests could happen.
