A pair of meteor showers will peak at the same time this week, dotting the night sky with as many as 25 meteors per hour.
According to the American Meteor Society, the Southern Delta Aquariid peaks in late July. This year, it will coincide with a second, smaller meteor shower called the Alpha Capricornids.
Peak activity for the Delta Aquariids happens in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 30, while the Alpha Capricornids are projected to produce around five meteors per hour. Clear skies are forecasted across most of Mississippi for Tuesday and the rest of the week, making the conditions ideal for viewing the showers. While no special equipment is needed to see the meteors in action, it’s easier to see them away from city lights and when the moon wanes the smallest.
Officials with NASA say premiere visibility for meteor showers is between midnight and just before dawn. The next major meteor shower will be the Perseids, which will peak in mid-August.
