MSU Mailbag: What Are Mississippi State Fans Asking Prior to Game Day?

What better way to kill some time before Game Day than with a little Twitter Q&A session? I took some of your questions on this Friday morning, and there are some good ones to expound upon here in a larger than 280 character format.

A defensive player is a smart choice, especially if State wins the toss and defers, but I have to think Moorhead being an offensive coach wants the ball. I think in this offense, you’ll see more carries in goal situations going to running backs instead of the quarterback, so Aeris Williams plunging in from a yard out seems right to me. Another distinct possibility is going up top on the first play and hitting Stephen Guidry or Austin Williams for a long pass play right out of the gate.

The expectations are higher than I can remember in a long time at Mississippi State, and based on the work Dan Mullen did in raising the floor in Starkville, its completely fair to look at this roster and set the bar at 9 wins or better in the regular season. If the Bulldogs were to go 8-4, it could be seen as a disappointment unless one of those wins is Auburn or Alabama. Even then, most fans and the media would tell you the Bulldogs underachieved.

Mississippi State will definitely see some new faces making big plays this season, and Brian Cole is one I would definitely expect to make an impact. Cole will be starting at the STAR position and will get some opportunities at kick returner as well. Chauncey Rivers should be another defensive player who makes a big impression in his first season. On offense, it’s all about the receivers, as I would predict Stephen Guidry, Austin Williams, and Devonta Jason to all have big first years.

As the greatest professional wrestler of all time, the “Nature Boy” Ric Flair would say, like it or don’t like it, learn to love it. It will be Don’t Stop Believin’. That’s one tradition that appears to be here to stay.

Don’t forget to tune in to SportsTalk Mississippi later today, I’ll be in studio with Michael Borkey for the full three hours, and of course, I’ll be at Davis Wade Stadium for full coverage of Mississippi State-Stephen F. Austin, starting with a Facebook Live pregame show around 3:30 Saturday afternoon. Give SportsTalk Mississippi a like on Facebook at the link below to get the notification.
