A COVID-19 outbreak within the Mississippi State football program has caused this weekend’s matchup between the Bulldogs and the Auburn Tigers to be postponed.
As detailed by MSU Athletic Director John Cohen in a statement, the Bulldogs fell below the SEC’s 53-player threshold due to positive tests and contact tracing.
“Based on positive tests and those considered as close contacts, along with non-COVID injuries, we do not have the minimum number of scholarship student-athletes available for Saturday’s game against Auburn,” Cohen said. “While we are disappointed that Saturday’s game has been postponed, our priority is the health, safety and well-being of our student-athletes and staff. We will continue to follow all established protocols and evaluate the most responsible path to return to the field.”
The matchup, to be played in Starkville, will now be rescheduled for December 12th.
Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger, who first reported the news, went on to state that the Bulldogs will temporarily shut down all team activities for the time being.
Additionally, this weekend’s Alabama/LSU game is in question due to an outbreak within the LSU program.
