For the second day in a row, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) has reported less than 2,500 new cases of COVID-19.
Wednesday’s report of 2,322 new cases brings the state’s total number of cases to 772,844. With the confirmation of 77 additional deaths, 11,455 Mississippians have passed away from the virus. As of Monday, 1,150 people with confirmed infection were hospitalized.
In a COVID-19 Health Care Town Hall on Tuesday, Dr. Paul Byers of MSDH noted that Mississippi may be nearing the end of the current wave.
“When we look overall, it’s not just our case numbers that are coming down and our deaths are slowly coming down when we look at the trends, we are seeing other indicators that tell us we’re on the back end of this current wave,” Byers said. “We’re seeing less emergency department visits for COVID. We’re seeing less demand for testing. We’re seeing decreased impact in our nursing homes as far as nursing home outbreaks. These are all positive indicators that we’re moving in the right direction.”
