Jackson police have determined that a baby’s death on Wednesday came at the hands of her mother and aunt.
The infant’s mother, 28-year-old Lagayla Haynes, was taken in for questioning after she took her daughter to the University of Mississippi Medical Center. According to the Hinds County coroner, the child could have been dead for roughly 10 hours before being checked into the hospital.
After questioning Haynes, detectives found that she and the child’s aunt, 23-year-old Samara Smith, were behind the death. Jackson Police Chief told WLBT that the child had been “brutally beaten.”
Both Haynes and Smith have been charged with felony child neglect.
