WASHINGTON, D.C.– President Obama commented to the LGBT community at a speech this week on gay marriage on when he thinks it will be legal every where.
To put his remarks simply, he said he thinks it will happen across the whole country sooner, rather than later.
“We’re not going to have to wait that long, because from Minnesota to Maryland, from the US Senate to the NBA, it’s clear we’re reaching a turning point,” he said.
The month of June is LGBT pride month in the U.S. and that is where the context of his speech came from this week.
“Hearts and minds change with time, and laws do too,” said the President.
Back in Mississippi, not everyone agrees with that sentiment.
“In 2004 over 80 percent of Mississippians voted for the definition of traditional marriage,” said Mississippi House Rep. Andy Gipson. “That’s like the highest percentage of any vote that’s ever been held on any constitutional initiative in Mississippi.”
The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to have a ruling later this month on federal benefits for same-sex couples.
