KEMPER COUNTY, Miss. — It’s going to take more money to finish that power plant under construction in Kemper County.
The parent company of Mississippi Power Co. announced Wednesday that the plant will cost at least another $177 million, pushing the total now to more than $5.4 billion.
The Southern Co. blamed the rising cost on poor weather, unexpected turnover of construction workers and installation inefficiencies. The plant was originally expected to cost an estimated $2.8 billion. Mississippi Power said it would cover this latest increase and not pass the cost on to its 186,000 customers.
