Unemployment in Mississippi has reached a new record low, Governor Tate Reeves touted on Friday.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that Mississippi’s unemployment dropped to 3% in March — tying the lowest percentage the state has seen.
“This is another sign that Mississippi’s economy is firing on all cylinders,” Reeves said. “We’re attracting record private sector investment and creating thousands of high-paying jobs for Mississippians. Mississippi has momentum and this is our time.”
Mississippi was recognized as one of the top five states for quality pre-kindergarten education. Mississippi’s high school graduation rate is currently at an all-time high and ranks above the national average, and the state led the nation in fourth-grade reading and math gains, per the governor.
Just one month into 2024, Mississippi set a record for new private sector investment in a year when it finalized approximately $12 billion in new economic development projects. This includes the largest economic development project in Mississippi’s history, a $10 billion private sector investment by Amazon Web Services that will create 1,000 jobs.

Mississippi began seeing steep declines in rates in March 2023 when the state reached 3.5 percent unemployed. In April, Mississippi’s rate dropped to 3.4 percent. The state declined to 3.2 percent in May, and 3.1 percent in June before hitting the current record-low of 3 percent flat and reaching that feat once more in early 2024.
