NEW ALBANY, Miss. – Sunday storms claimed the life of at least one in Mississippi and left thousands in the dark.
New Albany police said winds pushed down a tree that caved in two passing cars. One passenger was killed. That person’s name was not immediately released. The victim wasn’t alone needing medical help. Several others received substantial injuries, however, it was not immediately clear exactly how many.
Thunderstorms also knocked out power to thousands of homes and businesses across the state. Entergy reported more than 5,000 in the dark early Sunday evening while Mississippi Power reported more than 500 powerless.
Among the hardest hit areas, Warren County where about 2,000 reported outages. The destruction includes trees and power lines across a portion of Hwy 80 which was closed so that Entergy crews could remove the debris.
