As Mississippi has seen an influx in school shooting threats over the past week, a Calhoun County woman has been arrested for reposting a threat to social media that was made two years ago.
Elsie Jo Cavnor was taken into custody after local and federal authorities were alerted that she shared what’s called a Snapchat memory – one of the social media platform’s features allowing users to save and share their collection of previously posted pictures and videos – in which she threatened to “shoot up a school.”
“Today, the Calhoun Co. Sheriff’s Office and Bruce Police Department were contacted by the FBI that a ‘memory’ from Snapchat had been posted with the comment, ‘I say we go shoot up a school,’” a Friday statement from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department read.
“The original post was made two years ago,” the statement continued. “The individual that made the post was immediately questioned and was arrested for making a terroristic threat.”
While the name of the targeted school was not released, the sheriff’s office added that it was placed on lockdown for a short time on Friday as authorities investigated. The Calhoun County School District contains seven schools and over 2,180 students.
Cavnor could face up to 10 years in prison, the maximum sentence for making a terroristic threat in Mississippi.
