The Mississippi Valley State community is mourning after a football player was killed on Friday night.

Ryan Quinney, a junior linebacker for the Delta Devils, died in a car crash, according to the university. A social media post announcing Quinney’s passing was made Saturday morning.

“We are heartbroken to share that our beloved student, Ryan Quinney, tragically lost his life in a car accident last night. Ryan was a bright light in our community with a spirit that lifted everyone around him. He will be deeply missed,” a portion of the post reads, going on to ask for thoughts and prayers for the Quinney family.

“During this difficult time, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Ryan’s family and loved ones. Please keep them, along with his friends and classmates, in your thoughts and prayers. Let us remember Ryan’s impact on our lives and honor his memory by supporting each other through this loss. Rest in peace, Ryan.”

Quinney was a native of Mobile, Ala., and transferred to MVSU from Lane College. According to the university’s athletics website, he had 13 tackles in five games this season. The Delta Devils are scheduled to play at Jackson State on Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m.

While law enforcement has not released any details, Quinney’s father said on social media that the crash took place in Yazoo City, which is about 50 miles south of the MVSU campus in Itta Bena.
