Weather conditions continue to quickly change throughout Mississippi, with freezing temperatures and frost anticipated in the early hours of several portions of the state this week.
At this time, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) and National Weather Service (NWS) are advising residents to prepare for winter weather and extreme cold events to ensure safe driving while traveling across the state.
Crews monitoring weather conditions in Mississippi are asking residents to practice safe driving by staying alert for icy roads in the mornings and braking early and gently to avoid skidding.
MDOT is recommending Mississippians to keep the following items in their vehicles in case of an emergency:
- Windshield scraper
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Jumper cables
- First aid kit
- Blankets
- Cell phone charger
- Water/snacks
- Emergency flares or reflectors
The NWS is also warning individuals to be mindful of extremely cold air that, if combined with brisk winds, could induce frostbite or hypothermia in a matter of minutes.
Those exposed to extreme cold can experience frostbite on uncovered skin and extremities, such as hands and feet, or have symptoms of hypothermia if the body loses heat faster than it can produce it.
Cold weather can also affect crops, as chilled air outbreaks and frost can damage or kill produce for farmers and residential plants. Frost often develops on clear nights and can occur when the air temperature in in the mid-30s.
Cold outside? Avoid the risk of frostbite and hypothermia by dressing in layers, covering exposed skin, and limiting time outdoors.
