It has not been the most ideal start to the 2024 college baseball season for Mississippi State and Ole Miss with both teams dropping games against seemingly inferior opponents early in the campaign.
Mississippi State (2-3), coming off a series win over Air Force, could not find a victory in a two-game midweek stint versus Austin Peay. Likewise, Ole Miss (2-3), following a series split at Hawaii, was unable to come down with a win against Arkansas State in the team’s first game at home.
Here’s how it went down.
Mississippi State
Game one (Mississippi State 2, Austin Peay 3)
Recap: Mississippi State was unable to find enough scoring in the bottom of the sixth to overcome eight scoreless innings of ball in the low-scoring game.
Losing pitcher: Evan Siary — Four strikeouts recorded, but three hits and one earned run surrendered through two innings pitched in the loss.
Impact batter: Jon Jon Gazdar (Austin Peay) — Three hits, one home run, and three RBIs.
Game two (Mississippi State 10, Austin Peay 13)
Recap: Though Mississippi State led most of the game, seven unanswered runs by Austin Peay in the eighth and ninth innings put the Governors ahead after the final out was called.
Losing pitcher: Cam Schuelke — Two strikeouts amassed, but four hits and four earned runs allowed in 1.2 innings pitched. Tyson Hardin got the start, striking out one, but surrendering four hits and four earned runs in the loss.
Impact batter: Trevor Conley (Austin Peay) — Three hits, one home run, and three RBIs.
Ole Miss
