JACKSON, Miss.- The Mississippi State Fair is back for another year, and the gates open Wednesday October 5, 2016.
One of Jackson’s largest events, the fair will be hanging around the Coliseum October 5 through 16th.
If you’re downtown you can’t miss it. The 157th state fair lights up the fair grounds with lights, rides, sounds, and smells, the fair has something for everyone. The Mississippi Department of Agriculture has a full line up of concerts, livestock shows, and competitions.
Tickets and arm bands can be purchased when you arrive at all entrance locations. The official Facebook page for the fair will feature live video of the events, and ticket deals and prices for the next two weeks.
“I like everything down there but I think my favorite ride is the Ferris Wheel because you can see all across Jackson,” said Cindy Hyde-Smith, Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce.
Hyde-Smith said the rides are great but this is a great chance for kids and families to bring livestock and showcase them. She said it’s also a wonderful opportunity for people who don’t own animals to really see a different aspect to Mississippi livelihood.
“It’s so nice that Mississippi can still offer a fair that the entire family can come and enjoy something,” said Hyde-Smith.
This year camel rides have been added to the list of attractions. Fair goers can hop on a camels back and take a spin around an enclosed area.
Kids under 5 will always get in free and anyone older than that it is a $5 entrance fee. Parking is always a big question mark when heading downtown. Before 1:00 p.m. on weekdays all parking is free, after that it’s $5 for cars and $10 for buses. Other private lots are located around the area, but use discretion if not parking on the grounds.
