Mississippi State took the field 15 times in midweek action this season, and every time, the Bulldogs left the field a winner. State put together another victorious effort in the campaign’s final midweek affair with a 7-3 decision over Louisiana Tech. MSU improved to 43-10 on the season, and will look to rack up the SEC portion of the schedule this weekend against South Carolina.

Lost in the shuffle of Jake Mangum and Tanner Allen has been the constant play of third baseman Marshall Gilbert. Gilbert made the move from behind the plate earlier this season, and he’s become a solid player at the hot corner and at the plate. Coming off a weekend that saw him reach base six times against Ole Miss, Gilbert went 2-4 with that three run blast that got the Bulldogs going in the second inning. We’ve remarked time and again about how tough this Bulldog batting order is, and Gilbert’s emergence, along with players like Luke Hancock and Gunner Halter, just proves that there isn’t an easy out in maroon and white.

South Carolina will come to Dudy Noble Field looking to assure their place in the SEC Tournament, Mississippi State will be looking to answer all questions regarding their national seed. The three game set begins on Thursday, with the Bulldogs rolling out their normal pitching rotation. Per Coach Chris Lemonis, Ethan Small will draw the start for the opener, with JT Ginn and Peyton Plumlee to follow.
