Former Mississippi State track and field athlete Anderson Peters won an Olympic medal for his home country of Grenada in the javelin throw on Thursday.

The 2019 and 2022 javelin world champion secured a spot on the podium with a throw of 88.54 meters in the event. Not only was the bronze medal the first in Peters’ decorated career, but it’s also the first time a Grenadian has ever medaled in a throwing event and marks the first time a former Bulldog has medaled in the Olympics since 2000.

Peterson was edged by India’s Neeraj Chopra, who won silver with a throw of 89.45 meters, and Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan, who won the event with an Olympic record throw of 92.97 meters. The former Bulldog is one of 17 Mississippi-connected athletes competing in the 2024 Summer Olympics.
