Mississippians across the state will be celebrating their loved ones for the Valentine’s Day holiday today, with nearly half of the population set to commemorate another year of marriage.
According to a new study by QuoteWizard, a LendingTree company, at least 45 percent of Mississippi’s residents are currently married as the state has a marriage rate of six per 1,000 people.
At this time, only four states have seen an increase in marriage rates, with the Magnolia State’s rising by one percent since 2011. Other states that reported an increased marriage rate were Colorado, Utah, and Montana.
In Mississippi, the divorce rate plummeted 20 percent within the past decade, with the state’s current rate sitting at 12 percent.
Nationwide, West Virginia, Arkansas, and Maine have the highest percentages of divorces, while states including Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming have the highest percentages of marriages. Nearly half of the United State’s population is currently married, with 11 percent of people reported to be divorced.
Since 2011, the overall marriage rate has declined by eight percent, while the divorce rate has dropped by 17 percent.
Additional findings revealed that across the U.S., men who earn over $100,000 a year are the most likely to be married, while women who earn $75,000 to $100,000 a year have the highest divorce rate.
