Mississippi set multiple employment records in July, according to Gov. Tate Reeves.
Per a news release from Reeves’ office, total non-farm employment reached a record high with 1,192,200 jobs. At only 33,443 Mississippians, the state reached a record low for the number of unemployed individuals, as the state hit a new record low 2.7% unemployment rate.
“Yesterday, Mississippi made history in education, today it’s our economy,” Reeves said. “What we’re witnessing in Mississippi is unprecedented success that is strengthening our economy, creating high-paying jobs, and improving the lives of Mississippians across our state. We’re doing the commonsense, conservative things that are proven to deliver results, and we’re not stopping anytime soon. Thank you to all the hardworking Mississippians who made these historic achievements possible.”
Earlier this year, Mississippi set a record for new private sector investment in a year when it finalized approximately $12 billion in new economic development projects. This includes the largest economic development project in Mississippi’s history, a $10 billion private sector investment by Amazon Web Services that will create 1,000 jobs. The other major investment is a $1.9 million EV battery plant coming to Marshall County.
Mississippi began seeing steep declines in unemployment rates in March 2023 when the state reached 3.5% unemployed. The trend has continued into 2024. The July jobs report can be read in full here.
