The Mississippi Department of Transportation has announced that the following roads are closed:
Amite County
- The westbound lane of Hwy 24 just east of Hwy 48. The eastbound lane is open for travel.
- The northbound lane of Hwy 569 from Berwich Castle Road to the Louisiana State Line. The southbound lane is open for travel.
Pike County
- Hwy 575 between SR 48 and Osyka Progress Road—CLOSED until further notice.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LADOTD) reports I-12 west is currently closed in Hammond due to flooding. Traffic is detouring from I-55 south to LA 22 west.
During breaks in the weather, MDOT crews are in full force today making repairs to open roads in a safe condition for the public. Workers are reconstructing shoulders, removing damaged roadway that has undermined, temporarily rebuilding roadways, protecting and repairing damaged drainage structures, and inspecting roadways and drainage structures.
Flooding is a top weather related killer. Most flood deaths occur at night when people become trapped in a stalled vehicle in a flooded area. Following these safety measures can help ensure you and your family’s safety on flooded roadways:
- Avoid already flooded areas. A flowing stream can carry a vehicle downstream.
- Never drive through a flooded area. Always remember to TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN!
- If you are driving at night, be especially cautious as it is harder to recognize flood conditions.
- Never drive around a barricaded road.
- If your vehicle stalls, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground. Rising water can engulf a vehicle and its occupants.
MDOT crews will continue to monitor the potential for flooding and maintain the safety of motorists in the affected counties.
