VICKSBURG, Miss.–Trying to cross the Mississippi River at Vicksburg presented a real problem Wednesday morning. You couldn’t do it. All lanes of the bridge were closed after a massive truck pile-up that also involved a chemical spill.
“Five big rigs and three vehicles are involved in a multi-vehicle crash,” said Warren Strain, spokesperson for the Highway Patrol. “One of the big rigs is a tanker and, apparently is leaking a hazardous chemical.”
The wreck was on the Louisiana side, in the west bound lanes, but all lanes had to be closed due to the chemical spill. Strain said Louisiana emergency responders were handling the wreck.
Another problem was the diversion route. Traffic was being sent to cross the bridge at Natchez, a one and a half hour trip from Vicksburg, but there was ice reported at I-20 and Hwy. 61.
