Mississippi Republican Legend Dies at 88

MERIDIAN, MISS– Gil Carmichael, called a visionary and inspiration by the Mississippi Republican party, has died at the age of 88.

Carmichael passed Sunday at Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian.

Carmichael ran for Governor twice, served as the transportation adviser for George H.W. Bush, and was a successful businessman.

“Gil Carmichael inspired a generation of Republicans in 1975, when he became a force in Mississippi Politics. I was one of them. He was a mentor and a friend and he will be missed. Mississippi has lost two great men recently who made this state a better place for us all. They both now walk the streets of Glory.”
