KEMPER COUNTY, Miss. — Mississippi Power Company has a new plan to charge customers more for its $6.2 billion coal plant under construction in Kemper County.
It is the company’s fourth Kemper related rate filing with the Mississippi Public Service Commission and would be a replacement of the 18 percent rate increase the commission took back after a recent Mississippi Supreme Court ruling that the 18 percent hike was illegal and customers were due $353 million in refunds.
“This filing will not affect the Kemper-related refunds customers are expected to receive per Commission requirement, and will not increase customer rates from current level,” explained Mississippi Power President and CEO Ed Holland.
The company has asked the Public Service Commission to make a decision by July 20. If it doesn’t, rates could decrease on that date. And in that situation, Holland said the Kemper project would run out of money by November.
