It’s been one year since Hamas led an attack on Israel, resulting in more than 1,200 people being killed — 46 of whom were U.S. citizens — and over 200 being taken hostage.
The attack escalated rising tensions in Gaza and Israel has since launched an initiative to wipe out Iran-backed Hamas while simultaneously working to return the remaining 100 hostages to their respective homes.
In the making, an estimated more than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed during Israeli-led targeted attacks on suspected Hamas strongholds. The figure does not distinguish the number of deceased militants or civilians.
In turn, Iran has also launched missiles at multiple Israeli air bases and has pledged that it won’t back down in its continued fight against Israel. Iran’s supreme leader has also praised the October 7, 2023 attack against the Middle Eastern country as a “turning point in history.”
Both the Israeli and Iranian regimes have drawn criticism for their alleged roles in the ongoing war. Here’s how Mississippi’s elected officials are reacting to the anniversary of Hamas’ attack:
