Former NFL running back and Mississippi native Clinton Portis has been added to the coaching staff at Delaware State, according to an announcement made by the university.
Portis, originally from Laurel, teams up with recently hired Hornets head coach DeSean Jackson as they will work together to turn around a program that went 1-11 in 2024 and has won only two games over the past two seasons.

As noted in the social media post, Portis will coach his old position group at running backs. During a professional career that spanned nine seasons with Washington and Denver, Portis rushed for over 1,000 yards on six occasions. He finished with 9,923 yards, 80 total touchdowns, and was named an All-Pro in 2008.
This will be Portis’ first coaching gig since retiring from the NFL in 2012.
Portis moved from Mississippi to Florida as a teenager with his mother. He attended Gainesville High School before becoming the second true freshman since 1975 to start as a running back at the University of Miami. As an All-American, he helped lead the Hurricanes to a 2001 BCS national championship.
