The Mississippi Highway Patrol issued over 3,000 citations and responded to one fatal crash during its New Year enforcement period.
The period, which began Tuesday morning and went until midnight Wednesday, included 3,038 citations and 27 people being arrested for driving under the influence. Additionally, 333 motorists were cited for not wearing seatbelts.
MHP responded to 68 crashes that combined for 21 injuries and one death during its annual safety initiative. The fatal wreck happened in Union County on New Year’s Day when a Mazda being driven by Van Wade, 42, of Tupelo, left the roadway and struck a tree.
