Even though it’s technically December 26, the Mississippi Highway Patrol’s annual Christmas enforcement period will remain in effect until midnight Monday.
During an appearance on MidDays with Gerard Gibert, MHP Captain Chris Turnipseed reported that there have been five fatalities since the enforcement period began Friday morning.
“We’ve had about half the number of accidents this year, as opposed to what we had last year. But the bad thing about it is we have had five fatalities so far over this holiday period,” Turnipseed said.
Turnipseed added that of the five fatalities, none were wearing seatbelts.
As the enforcement period continues, MHP officials are encouraging those on the road to stay safe, especially with freezing temperatures sticking around in some parts of the state.
The MHP’s full report from the enforcement period will be available Tuesday.
