Motorists are encouraged to travel safely this holiday season as the Mississippi Highway Patrol begins its Christmas enforcement period.
From now until Thursday at midnight, a heightened presence of law enforcement officers will be on roadways across the Magnolia State.
Per a release from the Department of Public Safety, state troopers will be actively patrolling highways and interstates. Their efforts will focus on reducing speeding and enhancing overall road safety during what is anticipated to be a busy travel season.
During last year’s Christmas holiday travel period, troopers investigated 144 crashes with one resulting in a fatality, and made 78 DUI arrests on state and federal highway systems.
“With the Christmas season upon us, the Mississippi Highway Patrol encourages everyone to drive responsibly, ensuring a safe holiday filled with joy alongside family and friends,” James Ivory, Lt. Colonel of the Mississippi Highway Patrol, said.
“We are committed to enhancing public safety through the diligent enforcement of traffic laws alongside our local partners. Our primary goal is for everyone traveling on Mississippi roadways to reach their destination safely, allowing all to celebrate a Merry Christmas.”
The New Year enforcement period is expected to be announced sometime next week.
