GRENADA, Miss. — You may have heard of Brister’s H & W Compounding. It is a pharmacy in Grenada and they market nonprescription herbal supplements. What you may not have known is the pharmacy also supplies Mississippi with the ingredients used in lethal injections for executions.
The Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) revealed the identity of that pharmacy to the Lawyers of death row inmate Michelle Byrom earlier in March. They also made the information available on transparency.mississippi.gov.
At first, MDOC would not give out the pharmacy’s identity, claiming they were exempt from Mississippi’s Public Records Act. That was not the case since Mississippi does not have a secrecy statute in place like in one in Oklahoma, which was ruled unconstitutional by an Oklahoma judge Wednesday. The judge said it violates an inmate’s right to due process.
