A Mississippi couple has fessed up to fraudulently applying for unemployment benefits.
State Auditor Shad White reported Monday that Brandon Williams made multiple calls to Miranda Truelove, his wife at the time, asking her to help him apply for unemployment benefits while he was behind bars. Incarcerated individuals are not eligible to receive these funds as they are not considered available for work.
Williams received the funds via a Way2Go debit card, which Truelove used numerous times.
“Our team at the State Auditor’s office uses the latest technology and investigative techniques to get record results for taxpayers,” White said. “Thank you to my team of investigators and to the prosecutors for bringing this case to a close.”
Williams and Truelove were both prosecuted in the Lee County Circuit Court. They both were sentenced to five years of house arrest and post-release supervision.
Both will have to pay a total of $7,329.60 in restitution.
