USA Today has named the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum as one of the top spots to visit this Black History Month.
The museum in Jackson, aimed at promoting a greater understanding of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement and its impact on the nation, joined the list of sites in Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, New York, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.
“This museum explores some of the most important moments in the struggle for equality, including the murder of Emmett Till, the assassination of Medgar Evers, and the murder of three civil rights workers during the Freedom Summer of 1964,” Nancy DeGennaro wrote. “A re-created jail cell and a tear gas canister from the integration of the University of Mississippi give a sense of the dangers that rights activists faced.”
The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, part of the Two Mississippi Museums, is open Tuesday-Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
