The Mississippi attorney general’s office has cleared police of wrongdoing in three officer-involved shootings that occurred in 2022.
The three incidents reviewed were:
- October 20, 2022 – The George County Sheriff’s Department responded to a domestic disturbance call just before 12 a.m. A deputy struck an unidentified 58-year-old male who was subsequently taken to a local hospital. The subject who was struck by authorities is reported to have recovered from the gunshot wound. No officers were injured during the incident.
- December 11, 2022 – Capitol Police in Jackson were led on a short chase which came to an end on O’Bannon St. when the unidentified suspect exited the vehicle being pursued and fled on foot. An officer began firing shots. One of the shots allegedly went into a nearby home and struck a civilian, Latisha Smith, in the arm. Smith filed a lawsuit against Capitol Police due to her injuries.
- December 21, 2022 – Officers responded to a hostage situation at Walmart in Richland. A woman, identified as Corlunda McGinister grabbed one of the store’s employees and held her at gunpoint, prompting authorities with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department and Richland Police Department to respond to the scene. Attempts to negotiate with the suspect ultimately resulted in a Richland police officer shooting and killing McGinister after she refused to release the firearm she was possessing.
“In all three incidents, the attorney general’s office found the use of force was justified,” a release said.
Each of the officer-involved shootings was investigated by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation in accordance with state law.
