Miss. Reaction From Mandela Passing: Charles Evers, Brother of Late Medgar Evers

JACKSON, Miss.–The passing of Nelson Mandela on Thursday saw people taking to social media whether it be Twitter or Facebook and posting about his death.

News Mississippi caught up with civil rights activist Charles Evers, the brother of the late Medgar Evers, to speak to him about Mandela’s life.

“The thing most people remember about him is the sacrifice he made for freedom for all people,” said Evers. “And the most important thing is he never began to hate.”

He said that Mandela was a hero to he and Medgar growing up.

“Not only did he come out of prison and not only became the ruler of that country, he forgave them,” said Evers. “He treated them like he wanted to be treated.”

Now that Mandela is gone Evers said that he’s is saddened that he will never be able to attend an event and meet Mandela.

“His example shows you what it means to be true and honest about love for your fellow man.”
