Miss. News Briefs: Teens Charged in Break-in Murder, Chris Christy Expected in Biloxi, Ex-pastor Appointed as HRC Leader

VISIT FROM NEW JERSEY GOVERNOR

BILOXI, Miss. – New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is making a stop in the magnolia state. He will be in Biloxi August 13 on his tour of the states. Its part of his mission as chair of the Republican Governor’s Association.

BOATER MISSING

MADISON, Miss. — If you passed by the Ross Barnett Reservoir on your way to work, there is a chance you saw dive teams. They are looking for a missing man who went out on the water in a boat Tuesday night. Police say he jumped in and did not come back up.

TEENS CHARGED IN MURDER

GULFPORT, Miss. – Two teens in Gulfport have been charged with murder.  Police say they broke in to Lemont Hays home, beat him and the then left him for dead after shooting him in in the groin last week. A judge set a $1 million bond for 19-year-old Jalen Williams and 17-year-old Rashad Johnson.

SILVER ALERT CANCELED

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Miss. – A silver alert has been canceled in Montgomery County. The Mississippi Highway Patrol says they found James Wilson Burchfield safe and sound after he went missing Monday morning.

EX-PASTOR NAMED HRC LEADER

JACKSON, Miss. – Ex-pastor Rob Hill has been appointed as the state director for the Human Rights Campaign. A new survey the campaign released shows that nearly half of the state’s gay residents have been harassed, and one out of four say they have been harassed at either work or at church. The campaign has poured over $8 million dollars into southern states to push for protections for gay residents.
