EUPORA, Miss.–If you owned a business and put 15 years into it, you’d probably be devastated if a fire came along and burnt everything up. It happened in Eupora Saturday and the state fire marshal is working on finding the cause. Here are some news briefs to kick start a five-day work week:
EUPORA FIRE
Sirens were wailing all over town in Eupora Saturday afternoon as firefighters tried to get a fire under control downtown. It ended up totaling several businesses. Nobody was hurt, physically that is.
“I’ve been in this building for about 15 years, and then, devastation hits. You just never know,” said Gwen Ricco, a business owner who lost everything, talking to WCBI.
What caused the fire, they’re still trying to figure that out and the state fire marshal’s office is in town today combing through all the debris.
MAN FOUND DEAD AND NAKED
If you can help with this one, give Benton County cops a call. Just who would stab, shoot and beat a man to death, then pull all the poor guy’s clothes off, that’s what Benton County deputies want to know today. Derrick Sanders of Lamar, found dead Friday morning when a guy on a backhoe saw his naked body laying in a construction zone. Police think whomever did the brutal murder did it between 2 and 5 in the morning.
PLANE CRASH IN PRENTISS
A plane crashes in a field and everybody lives. This is the story of three people who were inside a small, private plane when the engine blew up in the skies over Prentiss. The pilot was able to get the plane down in a field and even though the landing was pretty rough, everybody lives. A man, woman and child were taken to the hospital in Covington County.
GREG DAVIS APPEAL
It’s an appeal. Greg Davis, the former mayor of Southaven says he was bamboozled by the prosecution when he was convicted of embezzlement last month. His lawyer, Steve Fareese says it wasn’t a fair trial because of five years of publicity and that the judge should have had it moved out of DeSoto County. So what does he want? His conviction thrown out and a new trial. We’ll see.
WOMAN STABS SOMEBODY IN HATTIESBURG FIGHT
A tough woman and a blade. This is Kimberly Bennett’s story. Police say she put another person in the hospital Saturday night after they had a fight and she pulled a knife. She’s charged with aggravated assault.
GAS DOWN TO $3.40
It’s down to $3.40. That’s what you’re paying for gas on average in Mississippi today. Tupelo, Meridian and Southaven, you’ve got the cheapest at $3.21.
BODIES FOUND/MURDERS
The autopsy tables at the Mississippi Crime Lab will be full today. This body was found in Iuka Saturday night at the Eastport Marina. David Wesson, 56, was found floating in the water and police don’t know yet just how he died. They don’t suspect it was murder, though.
In Hattiesburg it was murder and the body was found Saturday morning behind the New Jerusalem Temple of God church. Police arrested Michael Sullivan, 21, and even though they gave out his name, they’re holding back the name of the dead man and how he died.
And in the capital city, a body found in a vacant house while you were getting ready for Sunday school. He had been there quite a while and had decomposed pretty good by the time somebody found him. Looked like a homeless guy and they don’t think it was murder, but an autopsy is set for today.
