With public school football set to begin this week, the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) has announced that if both teams agree, game times can be pushed back from 7 to 8 p.m. due to the extreme heat the state continues to face.
MHSAA executive director Ricky Neaves made the announcement during Monday’s episode of This Week at the MHSAA.
“We are giving schools the opportunity, if they choose, to change their game times,” Neaves said. “You do not have to play at 7. You can move that to 8. Just make sure you home teams agree with the visiting teams that the game times have been changed and make sure that you notify the officiating crew to make sure we have officials when these game times are changed.”
Neaves added that the opportunity to alter game times is for week one only, unless announced otherwise. He also said that extra timeouts will be called by officials if needed while encouraging team personnel to make sure plenty of water is available on the sidelines.
As Mississippi is forecasted to face the hottest week in state history, the following games have already been moved from 7 to 8 p.m.
- Wayne County at Oak Grove (Thursday)
- Picayune at Brandon (Friday)
- Forest Hill at Florence (Friday)
- Germantown at Northwest Rankin (Friday)
- Salem at McLaurin (Friday)
