Ever since the Christmas weekend, The Mississippi Highway Patrol has been out in full force to ensure the safety of Mississippi motorists for their “Making It Home for the Holidays” enforcement period. The New Year’s Eve portion of the period ended on Monday night, and the department issued 4761 citations across that state over the holiday weekend.
With drunk driving as the primary concerns on New Year’s Eve, the MHP made 68 DUI arrests.
Overall 119 crashes were investigated, and one fatality was reported; the only one during the holiday enforced period. 18 injuries were also reported.
The one fatal crash occurred on New Year’s Day on Highway 6 in Pontotoc when 19-year-old Ladaja Q. Neely’s car left the roadway and collided with a tree. Neely was pronounced dead at the scene, and the crash remains under investigation by the MHP.
