If you’re traveling this Memorial Day weekend, expect to see an increased law enforcement presence on the state’s highways.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol has begun their ‘2019 Memorial Day Travel Enforcement Period’, and it will conclude on Monday at midnight. The MHP will also participate in Operation CARE. The Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort (CARE) is a national effort to increase officer presence on Interstate and U.S. Highways across the nation during specific high crash periods.
During the enforcement period, State Troopers will place emphasis on saturation patrols to combat speeding and reckless driving. The MHP urges you to avoid texting and driving or any other distractions that could endanger lives. Also, if you’re planning on drinking over the weekend, make sure you have a sober designated driver.
Safety checkpoints will be established throughout the period to promote seatbelt usage and remove impaired drivers from the roadways.
“We’re hoping all motorists will make safe, responsible decisions while traveling and arrive at their destinations safely,” the MHP said.
The MHP investigated 156 crashes including 1 fatality during the 2018 Memorial Day Enforcement Period.
