Four people were killed and 135 crashes took place in Mississippi over the Memorial Day Travel period.
According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, law enforcement issued 7,026 citations, made 118 arrests for impaired driving, and cited 864 motorists for seatbelt violations during the four-day stint that ended on Monday at midnight. Troopers wrote nearly 2,000 fewer citations and responded to one less fatal wreck this year compared to last Memorial Day weekend.
The fatal crashes occurred in Benton, Tunica, Itawamba, and Harrison counties.
In Benton County, a Chevrolet Silverado driven by 48-year-old Dwight Holcomb was traveling east on Highway 4 when the vehicle left the roadway and collided with a utility pole early Friday morning. Holcomb received fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead on the scene.
On Sunday morning, a Ford Focus driven by 37-year-old Jhajuan Milan was traveling east on Highway 4 in Tunica County when it left the roadway and collided with a culvert. Milan died at the scene.
Later that night, a Toyota Prius driven by 59-year-old Kenneth Cook was traveling north on Highway 25 in Itawamba County when the vehicle left the roadway and overturned. Cook received fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
The most dangerous wreck occurred in Harrison County Sunday afternoon. A Harley-Davidson motorcycle operated by 39-year-old Roy Holden, Jr., and a 16-year-old passenger were traveling east on Interstate 10 when the passenger fell from the moving motorcycle. Another Harley-Davidson, this one operated by 43-year-old Amanda Holden, traveled east on Interstate 10 when she and two other motorcycles took evasive actions to avoid hitting the passenger and crashed.
Two people were transported via ambulance from the scene while two others were airlifted to the hospital. Holden was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
