MERIDIAN- Looking to get out of town? The Meridian Regional Airport is now offering a second hub on its commercial flight schedule.

You can fly to Dallas-Ft. Worth, the current hub, but they’re adding O’Hare Airport in Chicago. These are two of the largest hubs in the country.

“This additional hub will offer the passengers in our region many more options when making their travel reservations,” said Tom Williams, president of the Meridian Airport Authority. “We are extremely proud that the addition of the Chicago hub will make our airport only the second small airport in the country to offer the advantages of the two hubs to the traveling public.”

The service is offered by SkyWest. The company stepped in when ExpressJet cut the CRJ 200, a 50-seat jet used in flights to and from Meridian, from its fleet. The flights will appear to operate under the American Airlines

The airport will lose one flight a day to and from Dallas, they are adding an additional flight on Saturday’s and Sunday’s.William’s said that the addition of the Chicago flight will be beneficial to the entire region.

“I want to thank SkyWest for stepping in and developing this new travel plan that will be good for our entire region,” he said. “I have no doubt this is a major, positive development for our community and region,”

The Meridian airport will keep their partnership with Hattiesburg as the flights increase. All of the flights will be shared and the plane will actually live in Hattiesburg overnight.

The flights will begin on June 3, but tickets will be available for purchase in May.

“This is the best little airport in the world,” said Williams.
