Thursday, May 25, and Friday, May 26, are expected to be the busiest travel days of the Memorial Day holiday, according to Don Redman with AAA.
“Plan accordingly. There’s nothing worse than being stranded on the side of the road because you didn’t plan for it,” said Redman.
AAA is anticipating over 300,000 people will be assisted on the roadside during the Memorial Day travel surge.
There’s also another hefty prediction regarding the influx of motorists this weekend.
“We’re forecasting numbers the highest we’ve seen since 2005,” said Redman. “About 39 million people will be on the roads. Typically we see that during a stronger economy… there’s more consumer confidence.”
Redman said gas prices won’t have as much of an impact on the travel.
“We’re looking at an average of $2.14 a gallon nationally,” said Redman. “That’s more than last year, but still a dollar less than what we’ve seen between 2011-2013.”
Currently, Mississippi’s gas price averages at $2.08 a gallon.
